The more users a site has, the more it rots. Some say that the 2016 elections have worsened it greatly, but that was just the last nail in 4chan's coffin, really. I would say that things have started going bad around the time gamergate blew up, but older users will probably disagree and say that it started even before.
Like I said, the main issue is the lack of alternatives. People stay because of that, no matter how bad it's been systematically getting over the years. Hiro and the mods can do whatever they please because they know that people have nowhere else to go so they'll put up with their shit anyway. And at the end of the day, they are right. I'd rather spend time here than on any other site.
