In England, there is the successive pattern of settlement from central Europe (original, then Roman invasion) and from Scandinavia (Anglo-Saxon), and from central Europe again (Norman Conquest, etc.). My point is that the modern day populations should not be considered to be purely coextensive with the group that arrived there -first.- There are many other examples for other populations as well.
