Hobbyist events are definitely great for this, since it gives you something in common to springboard conversations. It takes a lot of patience, and you are likely going to have a lot of failures, so it helps to be understanding that finding a life partner is a long-term effort. A good starting point of advice for making yourself appealing is to invest in yourself. Have something you are skilled in that you can use to show competence. Have your shit together, bills paid, house clean, personal responsibilities taken care of, etc. They make you stand out quite a bit in terms of appeal.
Maintaining the relationship is a different beast and my suggestions there would be to make sure that you keep your insecurities in check, put effort into showing affection, and communicate openly with your partner. Never go to bed angry with each other; always talk issues out to avoid the buildup of resentment.
I know a lot of this is just general advice, but do you have any specific questions?
