The thing is, the people paying her aren't like a normal employer. I'd guess (based on the Pareto Principle) that she gets about 80% of her income from 20% of her fans. These fans have "invested" a lot of time, emotional energy, and money into this parasocial relationship. Josie can effectively sit back and throw them a bone every now and then, and they'll still pay her whatever they can.
That leaves the rest of us sat here paying £5 a month just to be told there's no stream today. I won't be cancelling my membership today, but I'm a step closer.
