The purpose of the katana was to lacerate between gaps in the armor.
The purpose the claymore was to overwhelm the enemy combatant with force and momentum to the point of tiring them out (since most weapons at the time couldn't penetrate well made plate armor, till the development of thinner and flexible steel blades like estocs and rapiers).
You can see the evolution of melee weapon technology advance throughout the ages of Europe to slimmer and longer piercing focused weapons, while Japan stuck with katanas till the 19th century.
