Before, women ran the risk of pregnancy, which out of wedlock was absolutely dangerous for several reasons. Men on the other hand could up and dissapear and move on. (This is the primary reason for the whole key/lock double standard - sex was much more risky for women up until birth control).
Now? There is MUCH less risk for women, meaning they are operating on an equal field with men for the first time.
