At one point, in what, 2021, it became the focal point of AI for hobbyists due to model leaks being posted there. There was the meta llama1 text model leak and then the Stable Diffusion and then NovelAI leaks which were used for 2D images. Even a few major players like automatic1111 (the guy that made the UI that most people used) being from there made it an important place to hang out to learn things and get news before anywhere else.
Ultimately, though, its extremely lax moderation killed the momentum. In actuality it's a board for people banned everywhere else.
It's fair to hate LLMs, but without an AI board /g/ is the only place for them.
