The crucifixion is like a metaphor for the sins of the fallen world. This symbolic sacrifice and his ability to "forgive them father for they know not what they do" created a powerful story of forgiveness, rebirth and enlightenment.
If he hadnt died on the cross there wouldnt be a story. So in this respect he took on the sins of the world so his message of spiritual salvation could be heard.
