Urusei Yatsura and Ranma were both more popular and sold better than nearly any manime of the 80s save for Gundam, but even the Gundam series were adding cute girls into the mix during the 80s.
Even stuff like Dragon Ball didn't compare to Urusei Yatsura's popularity until Z started picking up in the 90s.
