You can see it a lot on /pol/ too (as well as those shitty "Debate me about [insert controversial opnion]" videos and that one subreddit called r/changemyview). It's a very common trope in movies/TV programmes about cops as well.
It doesn't necessarily have bad intentions. Sometimes it's a way of finding people who are sympathetic to your cause without making it sound like you want everybody to rally behind the same banner and exclude everyone else who's not part of the same cause.
