While AC will eternally > EQ, there is a love that will always be in my heart. Specifically for the 3 big MMORPG pioneers of UO, EQ, and AC.
Had some recent downtime with the birth of my 2nd, and got back into playing some AC on emulators. As a game, I'm convinced there is nothing that will be made that will touch all those points it did from the vast open world that compels you to waste hours running around exploring until you happenstance across some dungeon none of your bros have heard of, to the unique loot and combat systems, and so on.
Of course, this probably pales in comparison to the memories shared in those good old days. Those memories and the times they represent are kind of like taking a sailboat to the beach and losing it to the tide, slowly watching them get further out to sea until it no longer gives itself to the naked eye.
I don't think you could have those times without the purity on all levels. For instance, the total shit parts of those games fed into the purity of the pre-iPhone internet. The things that sucked about EQ, AC, etc. were also the things that often made for the best times. Today, everything falls prey to both 'best practices' and over engineering all the purity and fun. Just homunculus after homunculus trying to convince us they're human
