Racially, humans are more like dog breeds, less like different species. Dogs can interbreed, so too can humans. We as humans are not too far removed from one another in the tree of species that we are incapable of doing so.
We can breed horses and donkeys together and get mules, but mules are incapable of producing offspring of their own. Horses and donkeys are far enough removed from one another on the tree, but not too far removed that they can't reproduce.
As far as we know, we and chimps can't produce offspring because we are that far removed from them.
Turning now to God's intent, is it a sin to race mix? The bible has examples of race mixing, Moses and Solomon supposedly had wives of other races. Most sins have repercussions to deal with during this lifetime, not just in the hereafter. If it were a sin, wouldn't our offspring be like the mule- incapable of breeding? Or wouldn't we be incapable of creating offspring at all, ensuring the branches of life don't grow into one another?
If God had the power at Babel to scramble our tongues, why too would he have not modified our genes to make us incapable of interbreeding? And if we could not interbreed, wouldn't the most dominate race just wipe out the other races via just outperformance or through means of war? Perhaps allowing interbreeding was a way of maintaining peace and ensuring the human species diversity.
