Unfortunately I can't remember which thread the link was in but one of the points brought up was how having an enemy, an outsider to the group, helped the group become more cohesive because they had something to band together against. This is easy to exploit for anyone wanting to create a sense of comradery among a certain group (class, race, etc) and I think is a root cause of extreme partisanism seen today.
