-son is a suffex from antiquity in a time before surnames were common, that literally meant that you were the son of someone. So Dickinson = you were the son of the guy named Dickin
Most villages were either named after landmarks/other terrain features or the dude who founded the village
So the town was probably just literally founded by a frontiersman named Dickinson, son of Dickin
