I see what you mean, it's true that the consumerist mentality is really strong in Korea and many Koreans only exist through what they buy... but you can also find the exact opposite. Some girls get really excited when you talk about politic, social issues or things like that due to how difficult it is to find a guy that care about these issues in Korea. Most people in Asia only study "practical" matters that will assure them to get a job, and the "social harmony" make most debates rare and very difficult.
