1. This is for a few main reasons, many British settlers have been in the country for up to 400 years and see themselves as more “American” and British which you can see on the map in the South.
America also fought two major and very deadly wars with the Brits and had them as a political rival until the late 1800’s so many American’s were encouraged to lose their British identity.
2. Many American’s are part Anglo or Scotch but identify with another group from europe they are more recently related to who might have face some discrimination, such as myself who is like 1/3 Irish but 2/3 British. The Irish side of my family at one point faces some exclusion so kept and identity while the British side lost it. So I’d put Irish on the census.
3. And finally historical confusion. Because Ireland was the first place many British settlers wen’t before moving to America a massive number of American’s think they are Irish when they are not. About 2/3 of “Irish” Americans have Protestant religion which historically meant you probably were not Irish. They also usually don’t have Irish last names. So 15% of the U.S. population says Irish but probably 10% of that is Scotch and Anglo.
