The views are extreme by comparison to the majority public opinion and that's the only reference point we can use to describe it in a way that makes sense universally. You wouldn't claim that your views are the globally accepted norm, right? Whether or not they're extreme is decided based on how far they deviate from the norm. Personally I would agree that a viewpoint being seen as extreme is not enough reason to categorize it as objectively bad or wrong though.
No you should definitely be honest but we're not talking about normal people, we're talking about people who are representing a whole group of people and particular sociopolitical positions. They have to behave differently in order to get their message across or they will just end up sidelined or completely silenced. It's sad to say but that's what the world is like, especially now. Maneuvering is an absolute necessity in their position.
The problem with that is that people don't just conform because of indoctrination or brainwashing. Even if you believe most agree with your views, you're not going to get them to admit it publically until it is publically acceptable to do so which will only happen on a large scale if the ideas seem like a very mild deviation from the norm.
And it's not about obfuscation, it's about allowing people to change their minds of their own accord instead of demanding they jump from one viewpoint to another drastically different one overnight.
What you seem to be suggesting is that polarization will just cause people to form cliques and then everyone will calm down. Historically what happens is conflict until one side completely steamrolls the other and the cycle starts over.
