well there are two big reasons for its recent surge. the first is that relatively recently (2014) 5th edition came out and it makes everything super simple compared to previous versions of d&d and other tabletop games, so you can pick it up in an afternoon and it lends itself more towards focusing on roleplaying than getting bogged down in combat. the other, probably more notable contribution, is critical roll.
you may have even heard of it but the short version is that it's a weekly d&d game streamed by matt "wholesome chungus 100" mercer with a bunch of his voice acting/writing friends. the general quality is really high of course given that they're literally all professionals in RP-adjacent fields but for whatever reason people just REALLY resonate with all the characters and story or whatever. i'd venture to guess that like 70% of people who are interested in d&d right now are interested because of that stream
