Let me put it this way... Herr Gomez could not have known about the Magocaust. It was, after all, just a lie propagated by anti-Bezi extremists led by Raven and Corristo, looking for the slightest pretext to break diplomatic relations. Knowing his later connections with Beliar, Raven potentially saw what was being prepared. He knew that the Gomez-Angar-Lee Camp Union initiated by Bezi would eventually lead to the collapse of the system and the barrier. So he decided to act with a grizzled Archmage unable to forgive Xardas for his betrayal. Thus, ironically, Corristo followed the same path as his nemesis, playing with the corpses of innocents! How do you think they got those perfect doubles? They fooled the innocent magnate by telling untold stories about the new camp, and he paid the ultimate price. It's no coincidence that Raven is whole and healthy after the barrier was destroyed. He did his job, and when the plan hit, he gave it a leg up. He left the dirty work of getting rid of inconvenient mages to Pyrokar, who wanted to retain his hegemony in Khorinis. No one speaks of this, however... Beziosad's agents caught up with Raven soon after, so there was no witness or evidence left.
That scumbag Bezio... When he realized his mistake, he didn't intend to answer to anyone, and Xardas only echoed him. After all, they had no intention of giving up their newly acquired living space. They left Pyrokar at the mercy of the orcs and continued their plotting on the continent. Xardas took the runic magic, and Bezio became a usurper. It was not for Gomez to stand guard over the rune to then be so beastly ridiculed at the very end.
I still think that what Raven and Corristo did was to save the kingdom. Of course, they couldn't know anything about the dreamer so while noble, their decisions were fundamentally flawed. Gomez, as a patriot, would not have been tempted by Bezi's whispering also we could have avoided all this...
