Being good is important, but not letting people walk on me/self preservation is equally important. Really though, being good tends to be a side effect of meditation/prayer/fasting etc. not something you decide to do because you should. I used to read a lot which is nice to get your footing but studying religions should be a short lived experience, save time for practice and study of yourself (or "the self" if you want to call it that).
