You do realise that if I wanted a 'mental painkiller' there are much 'nicer' ones that a life of faith in a being of literal perfection that shines on all my own petty and horrific imperfections, a sexual and family morality that is an anathema in todays word and all but ensures a life of chastity and solitude unless you live in certain locations, and where in actual fact you are faced with the very literal fate of at *least* several family members and many friends are destined for destruction/damnation? How many 100% Christian families do you think exist in this day and age? That would be amazing if everyone I loved was saved.
