People thought they had race all figured out, back then. It was all easy peasy, the race pyramid was the best theory etc.
He could not have known about DNA and genes, but he could have done some research into history and come to the conclusion that many of his views were wrong esp. that Jews are not a race but a religion. The race of Israelites having been wiped out 2000 years ago by the romans.
