In the case of a carrier it's for force projection, but at the same time if you cripple one you throw a giant wrench into that idea of force projection. Usually carriers are in carrier groups with subs and other warships to act as a ring around the carrier. So if some underwater drone did cripple this carrier then it's a big deal.
