The fact it is given to children at all is absolutely fucking abhorrent. Providers who prescribe it like that should be castrated, lobotomized, and forced to break rocks in a uranium mine.
Of course, Risperdal is an antipsychotic, a more primitive atypical, which are very different from SSRIs. The main hormonal issue that we see with SSRIs are for men where the SSRI increases aromatization, which is the process by which a proportion of produced testosterone is converted into estrogen. This is normal, to a degree, but the SSRI will increase this, at least somewhat.
If someone MUST take something, starting with a small bit of something like Lamictal is a much better and safer bet. Something from that class would also be radically easier to get off of.
