Commodities can be good if you time them well. I bought Lundin Mining at 7 bucks so I am doing pretty well on Copper/Gold (also bought Lundin Gold which I especially like) but their long-term returns are just paltry.
If you wanted safety, screw Gold and just buy MSFT.
