I think this guy was just looking for an excuse to burn himself alive, because he had an attempt before. He wasn't content with self-immolating for the hell of it, so, he needed to find some cause to attach himself to. Climate change sounds nice enough, I guess.
I still have no clue what they thought would come of doing this. You brought attention towards the fact that climate change exists. Good job? Do you think that everybody doesn't already know? People self-immolate for causes because they're not very well-known by a lot of people, and the only way to bring attention towards their issues is a measure as drastic as burning themselves. Here, it's something that people are already completely aware of.
