The island doesn't get occupied either, it's not that similar to Japan. It's a bunch of European nations forming a single white ethnostate and walling themselves off from the world.
You can't draw direct parallels though. Very little of it is based on real history. The Eldians are portrayed as both Nazis and the jews, for example. Their armband is basically a combination between the Nazi armband swastika and the Star of David. Pic related.
