OP lives in the city. The uptick in highly publicized mass shootings in the last decade or so really hits close to home for him. Everything I hear from city-goers backs this up, and everything my elders tell me about "the bad part of town" involves the constant threat of mugging/murder. This brings the tension he lives with on a daily basis to a front, which he has to face emotionally as the emergency unfolds.
You, however, in your little island colony which has never seen a real war since colonization, have no concept of what it feels like for a gun to be a threat, and thus a mass shooting might as well be a fairy tale as far as your emotions are concerned.
I'm telling you, dumbass, that you're underestimating the gravity of the concept in a country that actually has guns in wide circulation.
Your shooter had to move in from Australia, that's how rare guns are in New Zealand.
