That was true for 2ch, but never for futaba
Futaba has always been a very otaku website with trillions of unwritten rules that gatekept them from outsiders as much as possible, any thread that feels too foreigner to them is spammed with "del" and the thread is indeed deleted tons of time
They also wanted to distance themselves from 2ch as much as possible, you could get banned for even mentioning hiroyuki there, though i don't know if that's the case anymore
They wanted to stay so isolated that they used to condemn those who shared futaba memes and screencaps outside of futaba, creating tons of images against them, though idk if that's also the case anymore lol
Now 2ch was indeed very popular, it was the center of the japanese internet, even prime ministers confessed using it and you can see it bring referenced in anime such as lucky star, NHK, steins;gate, gintama, etc
But at the same time it was still a chaotic place where people had mass suicide threads, raided korean websites, trolled journalists, celebrities, random internet people, sent death threats to companies for trying to copyright their memes, tried controlling public opinions on shows, ads and such, and so on
Their trolls were as deranged as the ones 4chan had, sometimes even more
Japanese text and imageboards are just so interesting in general, i love when we have /jp/ threads on them, it's wonderful
