Drug use exists (prescription drugs, then heroin), but is much less than what you see in regular city life. Many in Appalachia will go their entire lives and never once even see cannabis, much less smoke it. Beer, hard alcohol, and tobacco is the real drug of choice there.
But don’t get your hopes up about it all because you won’t make it. If you’ve never worked your hands to the bone as a teenager/twenty-something, you won’t be able to adjust to it now as an older adult. You also will never make a friend, neighbors will avoid you, and no one will ever trust you. Appalachians are fully aware of what city folks think of them. Since everyone knows everybody it will be impossible for you to move there and “blend in”. They will root for you to fail and encourage you to give up so they can giddily watch you scamper back to whatever liberal hellhole you came from with your tail tucked inbetween your legs.
If you have to leave your acreage to get a paying job to support yourself, you will make $50k max and face the same distrust issues at your new workplace but now in even closer quarters. The only people who can move into Appalachia are those that were born there but left for college or a job, didn’t fully lose their twang, and still have family there.
Appalachia was settled between 1750-1800 and has basically been populated by the descendants of those same settlers ever since with very few outsiders breaking through. Everyone has Scottish roots, therefore a very clannish culture.
