I legit forgot that The Boarding House was a part of this.
A Little Cloud is one of my favourites, like I said. Aside from what I already said about it yesterday, I often wondered why would people marry while they are so young, especially seeing how my former schoolmates are becoming engaged one after the other.

I would prefer to simply discuss it in Serikroatia's thread since I don't like making threads too much, but very occasionally he doesn't make them, and today I wanted to ask what you (assuming you are the same russki from yesterday) thought of Eveline; whether you perceived the outcome at the end as a negative or potential positive.
Nevertheless, even if I did that it would only mean a few more threads

I probably liked it most out of them all so far. Based Chandler the eternal coward and living embodiment of the sour grapes mindset, even his nickname hints at how petty he is. One of the notes said the Byron poem near the end was uncharacteristic of what he's famous for and "wearisomely conventional."

I mean he married at 30 or 31, that's probably pretty average or even late for the time.

It's difficult to answer. In my understanding Eveline's irrational descision not flee to Buenos Ires in order to fulfill the promise she gave to her mother symbolises a choice to follow tradition rather than the new ways. This point of view can also be reinforced by the story's substantive symbolism: sea has served as a symbol of danger and uncertainity since at least the times of Romanticism, so it has a romantic aura to it too. And organ is a very obvious symbol of the Church, hence tradition and duty. However, I guess Eveline herself wasn't happy with the choice she had made as suggested by the few last lines where she is said to have lost all her feelings; so, to my mind, that would imply that Eveline's heart responded to the voice of tradition and dilligence not so much because she wanted to, but rather because there just wasn't any other way for her, which she realised, even in all of its irrationality. So, overall, I'd say that this story is actually about determenism and the conflict between fleeing with Frank or staying with her family is just used as an illustration. So I guess it doesn't really matter if this outcome is positive or negative, because it just couldn't have been otherwise

I should have been more specific. I was referring to the people of my age, and I'm in my very early twenties.

As an anecdote, while I'm not the biggest fan of Byron (though I liked Don Juan) the fact that he can write a poem that is completely uncharacteristic demonstrates his skill.

Maybe I should have mentioned it came from his first volume which was published when he was 19 which might explain it more.
