Cosplay was also a huge part of anime getting more popular because it was a cross between girls getting to play dressup and dudes being horny.
Cosplay girls who were hot and into their hobbies used to be super rare so they had huge followings.
I think other girls saw this and got interested.
There's also the whole inclusivity push that these spaces have been seeing.
