Since they are completely insignificant, no business venture to start in those areas and they basically become known for being giant highways to get to others states and are loaded up with fast food restaurants for travelers who looking for a quick meal and to get out of the state as fast as possible. One example of this is Ohio, a shitty state with nothing to offer. They are proud despite being an insignificant midwestern shithole.
