It was a very VERY important aspect of the city, like, they thought that the status of the fire was spiritually linked to the status of the civilization as a whole. Year round it was tended to by a very select group of women called the Vestal Virgins, who maintained their own purity as to dedicate the entirety of their duties to keeping the flame alight. It was like being a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier guard on hard mode. Well if something ever happened to the flame or they were suspected of violating their chastity, sometimes they would take the accused, put them in an underground chamber with a couch, a lamp, and some food, and just seal them inside where they would inevitably die.
