>>10319203They did destroy quite a lot. Firstly, the soviets believed that religion was a drug for the people and practically wanted to eradicate it. Some churches were blown up just to get rid of them, some were used as warehouses or stables during the civil war. Secondly, a lot of churches were destroyed in Moscow because they were aiming to rebuild the city in a "soviet" kind of way with giant squares and avenues. So they ended up just plowing through some parts of the city. Lastly, a lot of churches were simply closed and abandoned and thus without maintenance have fallen apart almost completely. On the other hand, the USSR also built a lot, but most of their architecture was pretty ugly, as their primary objective was to make it as cheap as possible. Although for a brief period under Stalin some very beautiful buildings were constructed, but it was rather limited and mainly in Moscow.
