Project: We're building a decentralised image board at https://gitlab.com/rwdevsquad/rwds-dchan
We're still in the planning stages. Currently, it looks like we won't employ a conventional blockchain, because it would grow to infinity, and we don't need to have eternal storage of our shit postings.

I'm reading the old threads, but not done yet. Has anyone suggested making OP mod of their own thread and defaulting posts to sage status? Makes bumps more intentional. Pretty sure something like that would cut slide threads and shills to the bone. You could also randomly select users as jannies, like jury duty. Short sessions with enough selected that low participation wouldn't matter. Maybe a ratio...3% or something.

No, we currently thought about not moderating anything at the network level, so all posts are available to everyone. The moderation happens after you already loaded a thread, by subscribing to ID filter lists from some curators (everyone can be a curator). Regarding bumps, I'm not sure whether there would even be timestamps on posts. It depends on whether we're going to actually use a blockchain or not. Because if there's no blockchain, then timestamps are completely unreliable.
I don't think selecting random users would make sense, since there is no registry of users, and everyone can have multiple identities, if they wish to. I think it makes more sense to have some people advertise their ID somewhere and maintain a filter list that others can subscribe to. But reputation management becomes almost impossible in an anonymous, free-entry system, where everyone can have as many IDs as they want.

Especially when it comes to decentralisation, you can do many things, such as decentralised file hosting, decentralised computation, etc. Filecoin etc are just sloppy, if you actually read into their papers.

And to do any interaction with the blockchain at all (aka. posting), you have to have money on your account. How will it arrive there? From an exchange? You have to provide your identity to the exchange to buy any cryptos. From a previous account? Where did that money come from?

Have had an idea for a long time of creating tooling to essentially integrate software development with imageboards. That doesn't mean necessarily stuffing an IDE into your browser, but allowing for software development projects to be created and managed more or less in a decentralized way. Users / developers would tender feature requests by providing tests which confirm the availability of the requested feature. You would also have to have some way of stitching snippets of code together on the basis of which tests they pass ( i.e. you could submit a test explicitly composed of other sub-tests and a reasoning engine could automatically stitch together as much of the code as its knowledge base allows it to ).

Building a de-centralized application requires a de-centralized team. If you are not thinking in these terms purely when developing a solution to a real problem, your project will fail.

That is the idea. The usage of "tests" is just a way to wrap a more intuitive interface around the muh Monads. You would need an engine capable of parsing a test written in "human friendly language X" and mapping the test into a set of predicts and ultimately a compositional query type.

Excellent, this was precisely the idea I had as well. The only problem is how do you deal with posts that contain child porn?

It seems impossible to deal with CP without some form of unaccountable moderation, which defeats the whole purpose. If you have a good answer to this question I will contribute to this project.

It's certainly a complex project with many parts, but I think a handful of talented programmers working on it at least part time over a prolonged period could make some serious progress on a partial implementation of this. Ofcourse that is at the expense of shorter-term goals which may not pay off soon enough to make sense just for an imageboard.

The guy basically encoded a LISP interpreter as a Prolog program which is capable of processing what you could think of as the inverse of a lisp macro. So he writes a scheme LISP program snippet with some nodes in the AST left as "fill in the blank" nodes, and provides a set of tests a correct candidate has to pass, and the program spits the correct program out. But it only works for problems of trivial complexity. I think the main limit to his project is that his program is incapable of accumulating and integrating knowledge. The same request submitted twice in a row, induces the exact same computations.

With respect to your project -- are you going to involve money in any way or will this be purely a volunteer effort? Will it be hosted 100% on a blockchain?

Idk, I might set up some donation account or whatever, but currently, I have enough savings and a 50% job so I don't really depend on outside help.

It will probably be a modified blockchain that does not go all the way back to the genesis block, but regularly "forget" the past, so that it stays compact. This slightly reduces the security (I explained it better in the previous thread), but I think it's probably still acceptable. It might even be that none of the forum data will be on the chain, and the only thing that's really on the chain is the current spam protection difficulty level or something like that. But the whole project will be 100% decentralised, no master nodes, no trusted authorities, and most likely no currency either. So it will just be a decentralised network for shitposting, where posts might last a week or two, I guess.

Since we're going to build a P2P network anyway, I think adding a DM feature is pretty straightforward. And once we have that, we can also add voice calls/video calls (although TOR would limit the bandwidth greatly). Technically, we could do livestreaming, but again, it would probably overload the network.

The network can be made scalable if we partition it so that there are subnetworks for each board, and bigger boards could even be divided further, based on thread OP hashes. That way, nodes don't have to know everything and their bandwidth requirements are lower. We can also add a feature to request a direct connection to any peer (something like STUN/ICE over TOR/similar. I'm not too familiar with TOR's features like hidden services, I only know how onion routing works). And if you know/trust each other, then you can also create authenticated, encrypted connections without TOR as a middleman. That would allow for higher bandwidth, generally speaking.

I also have an idea to make relaying of bigger data (images, videos, etc.) more efficient: it's called cut-through switching. That technique cannot protect against invalid data, though, so we need to adapt it to have some probabilistic spam protection (the higher the rate of spam/invalid data that is sent along a certain path in the p2p network, the more store-and-forward (error-checked relaying) is employed). Usually, P2P networks like bitcoin's and ethereum's only employ store-and-forward, which is, receive the whole message, error-check it, and then relay if valid. In this hybrid version, you have higher speeds when there is little spam, and normal speeds when there is much spam.

For our base object for each post (be that some class with ID attributes etc) we could design it so that they are hashable. Each user can then contribute their hash list which allows us to build up a categorical distro of hashes across all users (i.e. P(hash)). - You can add a flag to each packet, and if it's set, then you guarantee to the recipient that you error-checked the package contents. Yes, of course. Actually, it is necessary. We need some hard proof of work/storage for creating identities (i.e., maybe something that takes an hour or two, or takes up 200GB of of disk or whatever), and then another, easier proof of work to make a post. The difficulty for creating posts is collectively agreed upon by the network periodically. I think this is the only place where we would need something like a blockchain, because this needs to have network-wide consensus. Everything else, like storing threads and posts could be done in a completely transient manner, without any inclusion in any central ledger.

For sure, I'll try lay out how I think the algo could work step by step.
1. We define the "state" of our system as a collection of hashable objects. If we are going with the graph formulation you proposed last time (I think would be wicked cool) each object could be a single post, with attributes specifying the post content, and the graph edges connecting to other posts etc.
2. During the general consensus step (i.e. someone proposes a new post) we take their opinion of the state which is a collection of these hashed objects.
3. The count of each unique hash is added up across all members of the network, so we have a set of unique "counts" corresponding to each hash
4. These counts are turned into a categorical probability distro, and the entropy of this distro is calculated (sum[p*log(p)]) which gives a good estimate of the "disagreement" within the system.
5. For a perfect set of agreement we can estimate what the entropy WOULD be, which allows us to normalize the value we calculate into something more human understandable
6. The proof of work can be scaled by this "disagreement" parameter linearly or by some other function

That's the plan. We need those to do filtering: You have curators that issue filter lists you can subscribe to, listing the IDs/PKs to delete. Okay, so what we'd be doing would be calculating a difference metric of a hash set or something. The problem is that you can't do homomorphisms with hashes (except if they are specially designed for a specific problem domain). It has to be efficiently computable, and should be computable from only a very succinct input compared to the actual thread/post graph. I think that it is probably the easiest if we don't have an agreed-upon total state of the image board, and everyone can add posts by just broadcasting them. When you want to sync with the network, then you get all the local views of posters and merge them (and discard everything that doesn't have strong enough PoW as agreed upon on the blockchain). So, my suggestion is to only use the blockchain to agree upon the spam protection difficulty and some secret value that is used to prevent replay attacks (re-sending of old posts maybe?).
I don't know too much about entropy modeling, I only dabbled in entropy theory superficially. But right now, to me, it seems like we can't do this kind of calculation (at least not on hashed graphs), since hashes aren't homomorphic accumulators. Might still be possible, I just don't know how it would work.

Defo agree on the sigmoid, though given some data I could try and build a bayesian model to identify suspect behaviour with a longer memory. The Negative-Binomial is a good counter distro for events which aren't pure poisson (I think could be a good model for "untrustworthy packet" rate from a specific ID). Its also conjugate which makes quick estimates feasible.

Then, when making a post, you have to sign the post with the SK, but also bring a proof of storage with the message hash as challenge parameter. You probably are right, the hash comparison method I proposed would probably be a massive pain in the ass to calculate fast. I was thinking along the lines of using hash collisions to do the counting. I.e. have a phat hash table with every collision incrementing the "count" of the value in that table entry by one. Could then quickly sum over all the entries for the entropy calc. But the collision checking would prolly take fucking long.

The program does not download all the existing messages in the system, only the ones linked to the threads you are directly interested. You do not want to have your HDD filled with useless messages, only stuff you're interested in.

However, there must be a way to be able to hide your IP when you post or receive stuff, and have the ability to use private/public keys to keep some identity, if you want, but you can change them at any time and no one can trace you.

pro blockchain:
- everything is consistent, nobody can trick new network participants into a faked view of the network.
- we can use post board-wide numbers.
con blockchain:
- slow
- overall network bandwidth is limited to the slowest peers (almost everyone has to be able to process everything in time, or consensus is lost)
- long confirmation times
- forks

pro blockchain-less:
- fast: posts are "in the network" as soon as you sent them to another peer who is relaying them to other peers (there might be parasitic peers who only receive, but don't relay)
- lower requirements on the nodes: no one has to know everything, it's just that everything has to be known by at least someone (who is transitively connected to everyone else)
- high throughput: since nodes don't need to know everything at once, they can focus on only part of the network state, and thus the traffic can be split, so that only nodes that are interested in some new post will receive it. => parallelism
con blockchain-less:
- people can send made-up network states to new clients (although the posts in those states have to be fulfill the network-wide anti-spam protection, so that's somewhat mitigated, but not completely)
- no one knows everything, so replicating the network state to new viewers is algorithmically more complex
- users will probably have a non-uniform view of the site, so you can't for example rely on posts being in the exact same order for 2 different viewers. But causality will still be achieved (posts will appear after (almost) every post that the sender saw before sending it, and guaranteed after every post referenced by the post itself (replies)).

And since you merge multiple worldviews from different peers while syncing with the network, you don't lose anything, at most the view you assemble together will contain additional spam. Not quite. If you do have everything on the blockchain, then there must be a full consensus on the whole state of the chan among all peers, which must be renewed periodically. The blockchain fork/path with the most PoW/PoStorage invested into it is counted as the strongest, and as valid. This prevents any inconsistent views, but the complex of achieving full consensus is very complex and grows more complex with the amount of change (posts, threads) per time made to the system.
In the version where the content is just hosted by peers, where everyone knows a little bit of the system, it's only natural that there will be different views arising, since there are no full synchronisation points that bring everyone to the same page. If we go this path, we just have to make sure that everyone has the chance to see everything, and then deal with fraudulent additions (i.e., some node inserts tons of shill posts when sending the network state to a new client that is joining and wants to sync). But I think that's pretty much solved if we can design an algorithm for poster IDs that make them hard to generate and to store (long computation and large size), as I explained in >>10345977.

In modern crypto and blockchain systems, it's all about what can be achieved within time and memory and bandwidth constraints.

This is why onion routing was created, packets are encrypted in layers and travel through intermediary nodes which are only aware of the previous and next node, so that the packet is totally disconnected from the original sender when it reaches an exit node. So basically, route your traffic through Tor.

But like I said, these are all problems that have already been solved. Sorry to keep shilling, because you guys really are much better off contributing to ZeroNet than trying to reinvent all these systems from scratch.

Dude, just because I don't know everything about every technology out there, doesn't mean I'm conceited for trying to build something. I have been designing decentralised systems and blockchain systems for multiple years now, and it's just my intuition that a generalised platform like Zeronet will not perform well in edge cases, of which I believe image boards to be one.
I have the ability to build a custom-designed network just for image boards, and I am pretty confident it will outperform generalised solutions.

Yep, that would be in the network layer, you'd manually stop receiving for a few ms if a peer is over his data rate.

Possible. Although I am not sure how much this would improve performance / spam resilience. It would definitely at least help a little, I'm sure. But since "network paths" along which much trash is sent quickly go to 100% verification before relaying any data, spam is always locally contained (within a few hops of the source at most).

You could do that if you make people spend resources to connect to the network (i.e., proof of storage), but that would require peers to assume some kind of identity even within the network layer (still possible, and probably practical, though). Then you'd have to have large amounts of hardware resources (i.e., disk storage) to assume multiple identities within the network. But all those restrictions increase the entry barrier for normal users, so we should try to find some compromise or sweet spot between low entry barrier and effective protection against a Sybil/eclipse attack. I think it's actually a good idea to do this.

What about peer-based node-creation? I.e. to get a new node, you have to convince an existing node to generate one for you, and some marginal amount of the parent node's trust is influenced by the child node's, disincentivizing parent nodes from blindly creating new nodes.

And maybe also don't allow low-trust nodes to authorize the creation of child nodes.

Btw I just looked at the "dynamic content" slides for zeronet, and it only works if there is a central authority managing the site. Any user moderation still has to request the site owner to perform the suggested changes. We (at least I) don't want there to be a single person with the authority to determine the site's new state.

Hmmm. I'm tempted to try and speculate you could switch the parent-child relationships randomly ( think about the way Boids flock together ) but that might simply be too complex and I'm not sure what good it would do, other than to make it unlikely that a hostile actor would be elected as a trust-generator on any given time-step.

Am I correct in thinking each peer would have to download the whole "network" before being able to interact with it? The most important thing should be for this to be near instantaneous as an end user.
Also easy guis and web interfaces to use the application as if it was a normal website like 4chan.
No images is a no go, imageboards, if it's just text it's not worth it.
The CP problem is important, it'll be easy for outsiders to destroy the place by posting CP.

The problem with total decentralisation is stuff like CP. Or even very low quality threads, imagine all the bbc threads, jannies sometimes do good work by removing them.

Like everything in life, there needs a balance between decentralisation and some sort of rules/power structure to make the place functional.

If we don't go with the on-blockchain storage of threads, then we would not have to do that. The only thing a new peer needs to synchronise is the blockchain, which basically only contains the current difficulty level for the spam protection PoW. So basically you only need to sync the meta-information, and this enables you to selectively sync the content.

The thing is that I, as a user, can at any point in time, choose to unsubscribe from any curator I am currently subscribed to, and then I'll see everything completely uncensored again. The kind of network I'm designing right now is completely power-flat. And I think it's even resistant against subverting the majority of the network, because you can still receive all of the posts if you can find even one node that isn't subverted. That's because the content is not regulated via consensus, only the spam protection is. The only thing a subverter can do is to make it unreasonably hard to post anything, or way too easy, allowing flooding. But you will notice both cases easily.

Ah yes I remember speaking about this yday, certainly seems like the way to go. Would it be possible to have some sort of global default curator though which applies blanket across all threads (but can still be unsubbed from at any time?).
I guess consider the hypothetical:
Some group of glowniggers are trying to get the place fucked by spamming CP. They don't have infinite resources, so are constrained as to how quickly they can change IDs. Users who see this CP stream can issue a request to add that ID to the global curation pool. At a certain ratio of requests / recent activity that ID is added which auto curates their content until a new ID is created.

We could do that, but it would be a central point of failure, because, what if that curator became subverted or something? I mean, it's not critical even if that happens, but still, I don't like the idea so much, to be honest. The thing we have to decide about curation is whether you will automatically delete all posts flagged by your currently subscribed curators, or whether you will still store them in case you want to unsubscribe.
Insta-deleting might be useful to protect against the CP tactic, but on the other hand would be able to completely censor messages from innocent people, because you can't recover the message if everyone already default-deleted it.
But I guess as long as everything stays in the RAM, it should be safe? I'm not an expert on the legal situation though.

The problem with this is that you trust a curator to hide stuff from you, but you dont know if curator hid the stuff because its what you wanted hidden or because he is now subverted and hides the other stuff from you, youll only be able to check if curator is a lier by turning him off and checking what was hidden yourself, and do it periodically and to all curators you use
Only way around it would be a very limited system of how curator can hide stuff at all, lets say they can only add spoilers akin to ones used on current chans aka cosmetical veil over content already present

I think it is better to implement text only initially, make it work flawlessly, limit text messages to a small length like 1K, and then find a way to support other contents, like images, audio, video, documents, etc. I'm sure you can just post text using this system (which is it's entire purpose), and use a link to the image which is stored on another site (imgur, self-hosted, etc).

Well, initially, it will only be a text-board. But all the meme magic that got this movement going was mostly image-based, and I think that we should have the possibility to upload images without external censorship on our platform. Because once shit like imgur or whatever denies us that, then we're pretty fucked.

Sure, initially, it will be of no real concern. There are also some more or less based video hosters, but you know, in the long term, they might not last. So for a long-term solution, we need a complete ecosystem for that kind of stuff. I mean, even bitchute is deleting kkk and moonman videos. You actually don't necessarily need one. The bigger the network is, the more available the files are from different peers, since it's massively replicated.
But I agree that it will probably not even be close to the speeds of 4chan. But that didn't keep me away from 8ch, since the threads there were pretty comfy. I'd take a slow content delivery over censorship any day.

I do realise that the internet is quite dangerous, but how else would I talk to people from other continents? Everything is a trade-off.
If you want to talk about stuff you don't feel comfortable with even over p2p TOR network, then you should indeed do your own communications infrastructure. However, that's extremely expensive and limited range-wise.

the issue with the internet isn't security, it's a bulletin board not a military communications channel. it's the continuous monitoring, censorship and authoritive nature. the internet is created with centralisation in mind
your isp can shut off your internet, judges and governments can decide to block anything. they can't do that with a radio, aside from physically taking and destroying the radio or jamming the signals.

the only reason tor hasn't been shut down, is not because it's impossible, but because it's a front for US military communications.
all tor nodes are public, you're only one click away from permanently blocking them nationwide.

it's much less precise than your ip address anyway, which is linked to all of your personal details known by your isp.

tor connections can be easily traced, just not read because of encryption.
it's less than ideal than for an image or bulletin board because all posts are public, allowing you to trace every post back to their original ip address with ease.

But I agree, if you control some nodes, and you can see all traffic, then you should be able to find out the poster, at least after a few tries, since the poster re-uses the same ID for multiple posts. What would make it somewhat harder to trace would be to send fake packets from time to time, or to mix up packets that arrive within a certain time frame randomly, etc. But stuff like that won't always work, in some conditions it still fails. There have been lots of papers on this kind of anonymous broadcasting.
