As a random internet user from across the continent as far as I can see you're doing fine OP, you're a great person for being there when life's going bad as that's what real friends do.

It's OK to want people you care about to be happy, but you shouldn't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm if you get what I mean.

You're straight so you can't love him as a partner, only as a friend, he'll be acting as a shitty friend if he refuses to understand that but unfortunately when people are in pain they can easily act in a selfish manner (I'm assuming he's depressed or something), perhaps you can convince him to try using dating apps or something?
