In any given day, your body will burn X amount of calories based on metabolism and activity level.
If you consumed more than X calories, your body has to do something with it. People with faster metabolism tend to burn excess calories off as heat, while slower metabolisms store more of it as fat. Both are methods for the body to make use of calories and keep the body warm.
Sumo wrestlers eat nothing but veggies and rice and broth and chicken, basically, and yet they get so fat. Why? Because they ate more calories than their body burned, and they do this every day for years.
People can still eat pizza and burgers and tacos and ice cream and donuts...they just need to keep to regular proportions.

The main harm caused by junk food is that because it doesn't nourish your body, your body still gives out signals that it needs more food. As long as you're eating some healthy food during the day you should have no problem eating some junk
