My only momentarily-considered fledgling hypothetical model says the key would likely be quantum tunneling. It would be a much more observable event. In our universe it doesn't have to happen often, and it took us many centuries of sciencing around before we found it, but there are plenty of examples of chemical processes that rely on the ability of a particle to exhibit wavelike behavior occasionally. Several of those processes can be found in any living thing on earth.
It's hard to say exactly how involved the process would be, but simply to get things to be capable of "reacting" and "interacting" in a 2d plane, at some point they're basically gonna have to pass through each other. Allowing particles to skirt that limitation through quantum mechanics takes at least one big roadblock out of the way.
