I've been turning the internet upside down in search of a simple answer for this and I still don't understand what exactly I need. So for one last time I want a simple answer to a simple question: WHAT do I NEED to work in the USA? I'm a European looking to apply for entry level oil rig jobs in the USA.

That's what I wanna know. I wanna know if I'm first supposed to apply to these jobs and then get the visa/work permit through the company that hires me OR whether the company requires me to show them the work permits already DURING the application process

Call the oil company directly. There's a lot that goes into immigration, so big operation like that probably has trained professionals in that department. Also, you should probably look into working on an off-shore rig. The water 12 miles from shore is US territory, while US companies have oil rights up to 200 miles from shore. You might not need as much paperwork if you work on a rig in that 12 to 200 mile zone.

I could be wrong but I believe the company must apply for the Visa. They have to petition the USCIS. You get the work permit afterwards, though the company may do that for you as well.

This should help a bit. As far as whether you need a visa before applying or not, I'm not sure. When I was off to an extended work trip to Australia, their embassy answered a bunch of questions for me and were really helpful. Try getting into contact with the US embassy via phone or email
