"Gender is a social construct" is just a phrase used for when people tell someone they can't act a certain way just because they're a certain gender (for example : telling boys they can't cry or be feminine). But just because someone's gender doesn't define what they are like, doesn't mean it should be completely 'abolished' , they can call themselves whatever they want to, if it makes them feel more comfortable, otherwise it would be the equivalent of telling a trans girl to just be a feminine boy instead, it won't work because they just identify that way.
