Declawed, neutered, and given a hernia surgery by a vet student. Not good. Yet he lived a full life: was my friend for his ~20 year life, ate so much (despite our food restrictions, he begged from multiple people and broke into the food cupboard to eat until he vomited, regularly) that his stomach got a bald spot from jiggling against the ground when he walked, held his own against a stray cat in the house (twice), and somehow impressed a female cat we adopted such that he had a qt cat gf for awhile despite his lack of harbls. He also ate a fish from an unsecured fish tank one time, and escaped after falling into a different fish tank another time. Not to mention tripping balls on catnip once or twice a year, eating tuna fish on his birthday and Christmas (he would come sprinting when heard the can opener), and catching the occasional snake and bird despite lacking claws. He survived a few illnesses and it was a sad day when he began peeing all over the house (in addition to the vomiting every 2-3 days), not just scent-marking but just defecating instead of walking to the litter box. He was an old cat and the vet said there was nothing to be done, and a descent into senility was not a dignified end. I will remember his glory days and when he would curl up next to me on the covers and sleep on rainy mornings. On cold days he would park himself on top of a heater vent, enjoy the warm air and watch the birds outside the window while sometimes saying "meep meep", then sleep in his cat basket on soft cushions and blankets. He was a good cat.
Protips for cat ownership:
- don't declaw them
- feed them real food (mostly meat) not cat kibble
- give them catlike things to do (perches to sit on, opportunities to watch smaller creatures, another cat, etc.)
- the old testament says don't spay or neuter
