Today all serious advocacy of creating a society scientifically honest enough to fully exploit our present technological know-how is treated as asking for "free stuff" - by people who are basically psychotically primitive, though they think of themselves as defenders of truth.

In the medieval era, many things were too expensive with "undeserving" beneficiaries, and technology stagnated for hundreds of years. Just as in the classical era before it, yet with even less awareness of what they were foregoing, as mechanical knowledge slipped by the medieval era.

The defenders of "economy" who treat taxation as something that will bloat without limit a la NationStates if we dare to invest in advancement... Those people are the voice of Greece's failure to industrialize, without whom humanity would've industrialized before it had even picked its surface mineral deposits. They are the voices of medieval stasis as well, without whom humanity would not have had an epoch in which the average person was a traumatized and helpless peasant.

Yet we honor the ones who say things are too expensive, and murder our technological potential in so-doing.

In Rome the question arose again. Had history turned down a different path, we could've seen Rome with ironclad steamships. Yet it didn't happen - why? It was too expensive. Again we know how foolish that determination was; we know now what awesome productivity waited to be unlocked.

The window closed! The fear of expenses resulted in the higher technological path being lost completely. It took thousands of years for society to discover what could have been.

We should not fear the expense of new technologies. Everything is expensive when it is untried and unproven! Our society breaks through into new frontiers of productivity and potential only when it works earnestly to bring the height of technology to "the undeserving". Had nobody endeavored to sell lightbulbs to the poor, we still would dwell in darkness!

Who will be the Edison of genetic engineering? A better question is, why are we sitting waiting for a great hero to light the path for us? We should be trying to give this endeavor to countless mature and competent organizations. Where is our New Walmart of Health?

The promise of capitalism is supposed to be that the myriad endeavors of humanity will bring us advancement! Yet the integrity of the industrialist seems to be used up and exhausted. No longer do our famed minds understand that lightbulbs were once "too expensive" for common use.

Automobiles as well nearly suffered the fate of being "too expensive" - do you see it yet? Can you start to hear that aching, primitive theme of false economy? Even automobiles nearly were conscribed to the dustbin of history, derided as having only niche applications!

Expense is not an honest barrier to put up against the green economy. If we don't need it, only then may we spare the expense; if we do need it, we will lose far, far more foregoing it.

Here again as well the voice of "too expensive" is trapped in the aspic of the moment. The pricetags of today are not the pricetags of tomorrow. Just as today luxury reaches farther towards the poor than it did this time last century, so the measure of technological progress is not how many things are gathering dust in niche applications after being spat on by rich primitives decrying the expense. The barometer of technological progress in an industrial society is and has always been the extent to which the best material in that society has been used to improve the lives of the poor!
