They do so, because to admit to the existence of such an entity is to admit that they are NOT the rulers of their own destiny, and that realization is a shattering blow to the ego of one who imagines oneself a god.
They are the kings of their own little fiefdom of their minds, and it is humbling in the extreme to be expected to bend the knee to an even greater King. Their pride wont allow it, and that is why pride is the greatest sin.
