Considering the fact that they take every opportunity to clap, like when their plane lands, I can only assume it reminds them of the comforting sound of airstrikes on empty middle eastern buildings

Its probably not clapping, its more likely the rippling and colliding of their rolls of fat all smacking together as they attempt to stand up.

I just watched that documentary about Ghibli studios and the making of The Wind Rises, and when they showed the finished movie to the staff at the end, the entire audience clapped. So, apparently it's not just an American thing, Japanese also clap at the end of movies.

Yes but the clapping in Japan is moderate, quiet and does not last long. Just a few claps to show respect to a piece of art.

When Americans clap the audience shows no taste, the claps are loud, obnoxious and it is a competition between the audience whose clap is the loudest, usually accompanied with howling noise that resembles wild animals
