All the tribes still exist today and still live in their traditional area of the land, not on reservations
There was never any attempt to kill them all en-masse, the worst that happened was just a normal land war between the Euros and the Maoris which ended in a treaty that is pretty much the founding document of the country
Literally the only reason they are a minority is because they had a low population to start with
