The distinction isn't as clear cut as you are lead to believe. Most pagan societies had a particular god they worshipped more than the others (ie the Gaul largely worshipped their equivalent of Mercury according to caesar).

Christianity is the same. It has "god/jesus" yet it has Mary, angels, demons and a whole lot of other shit (lesser gods by another name), different sects of Christianity focus their attention of different entities.

You could say the exact same thing about Christians, or any group really. The aztecs had their heroes and conquered other groups. Those heroic acts and cultures were far more fundamental to people than their religion.
