The ego is an important part of the psyche-- it is pretty much just comprised of how you focus your conscious mind. Really what you want to do is not get rid of the ego entirely, but learn to control it. Meditation is a good practice.
I believe it was Alan Watts who said something like this: The biggest ego trip you can have is getting rid of your ego. The more you try to destroy the ego, the bigger it gets.
I wanted to get rid of my ego 10 years ago, and learned it was just a quixotic ambition.
