1. I saw people pray at Tibetan Buddhist temples in Beijing, and where I first found the situation ironic, I then found it similar to how members of my own tribe wail at that Jerusalem wall. No matter where I went, I saw people struck by a similar enormity of history beneath their feet. Not many, but just the same small number of 2 or 3 as like wherever you go on Earth.
2. Death: I only discussed death with young med students who were shocked at having to tell a small village farmer who traveled for 18 hours that he was going to die in less than a month. Over there, you don't go to college to listen to Frank Ocean or Zappa, you go straight to med school, and when you begin treating patients, you quickly learn the humility of failure that is always trying to better your patients.
3. I never really dealt with that behavior, because like I said, they shut the fuck up about my pursuing a useless profession once they heard from another doctor I was an Ivy League. As a visiting lecturer of some type, I probably was allowed to say whatever I wanted and not be countered. The young med students were smartasses though, and loved to bring up controversial topics while torrenting porn on their phones.
