>>1095062>due to the history of Quebec wanting to leave Canada they have been too scared to do anything.also for the uninformed, there's two big things to know about the whole "Quebec is going to leave so the fed gives them candy and hugs!" memery.
Separatism has not been relevant since the 60s. It was a very close vote about it back then, but it still lost out, and interest in separating has only waned.
However, despite the memery about Quebec's massive deficit and how much tax money it receives from the federal gubment, Quebec receives so much because it pays a lot in because of how much commerce and industry actually goes on here. The deficit mostly comes from mismanagement of public services rather than sheer lack of income.
We have a lot of stuff that the rest of Canada does not; a good sea route in from the Atlantic that's reasonably far inland, as well as a lot of high tech manufacturing (most notably Bombardier, but there's also a Pratt-Whitney satellite, and some companies that make city buses, among others) and more recently have boomed in software stuff, including both video games and mundane software/apps. We also have a bunch of universities, and a college system that produces a lot of skilled workers. We also produce a lot of agricultural products, and have bizarrely low telecomms rates so we do a lot of call centre bullshit. As stated, we also generate abysmally cheap electricity that we sell at a premium to the US, as well as Newfoundland's own electricity back to it.
Basically, Quebec has a fairly diversified and functional economy, and workers to fuel it -- most other provinces can't say that, so QC has a lot of leverage.
BC is owned by the chinks, the interior has oil but literally nothing else, Ontario has commerce/banking but literally nothing else, and the maritimes fuck it up every time they try to do anything other than fish by trawler or forage for berries (see: Irving shipyards).
